Delhi: a woman killed because of a cigarette, 1 arrested

A 30-year-old woman was brutally assaulted and was reportedly killed by a man outside his store in Dwarka on Sunday evening after “refusing to give her a cigarette”. Police say the accused Dilip (45) has been arrested.

The woman, Vibha, lived with her husband and two children in Dabri Dwarka. She ran the general store with her husband.

Police said on Sunday evening that Dilip had gone to the store and asked for a cigarette and food, but had no money. When Vibha refused to give her anything, he argued with her and allegedly attacked her.

DCP (Dwarka) Shankar Chaudhary said the incident happened at 10:15 p.m. “Dilip is a plumber and an entrepreneur. He was drunk at the time and had an argument with Vibha. She tried to scare him with rocks and a broom. He was carrying a toolbox and pulled out a sharp weapon to slice her neck. Our team answered the PCR call and discovered that Vibha had been taken to DDU Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

CCTV footage of the incident showed the man arguing with the woman. She tries to threaten him with a stick but the accused takes a gun from his bag and attacks her. The woman falls to the ground.

The locals grabbed Dilip and allegedly beat him. “As the police investigated the case, people gathered there and demanded that Dilip be handed over to them. The crowd threw stones and bricks at the police party, but they managed to apprehend the accused. Two officers were injured after a few residents threw stones at them, ”the DCP said.

Police filed a complaint of riots against residents and five of them, including a woman, were arrested.
