While the concept is not new to the company, Wawa has started testing automatic checkouts in New Jersey.
A Wawa in Lakewood recently launched a self-service cash register, a store employee confirmed to NJ Advance Media. The store is located at 135, route 70.
The popular convenience store chain started testing ATMs in some locations in 2018. There are still cashiers, however, as tobacco products cannot be purchased at ATMs.
It is not known at this time if other Wawa stores in New Jersey will begin self-checkout. Wawa did not respond to a request for comment.
Last year, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wawa introduced curbside ordering to some stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The company also opened its first drive-thru last year in Garden State.
There are currently over 260 Wawa locations in New Jersey and over 850 across the East Coast.
