Jammu, July 12: Worryingly, at least 32 percent of men and one percent of women consume cigarettes, bidis, hookahs and cigars in Jammu and Kashmir, a survey conducted by the Union government reveals.
The official figures from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to which we have had access indicate: “Almost a third of the population, or nearly 32% of men and 1% of women aged 15 to 49, consume some form of tobacco.
“Tobacco products primarily used by men include nearly 27 percent cigarette consumption, four percent bidis, hookah, and cigars or pipes two percent each,” it read.
The survey further indicates that among women and men, the consumption of different forms of tobacco was slightly higher in rural areas with a total of 1.4 percent for women and 35 percent for men than in rural areas. urban areas which have a total consumption of 0.7 percent among women. and 24 percent for men.
