Tambaram police seized nearly 200 kg of banned tobacco products on Saturday.
Police said a tip had been received regarding the smuggling of gutkha within the confines of Selaiyur police station. Based on the information, a special police team was formed. When they tried to stop a car on the main Vengaivasal road, it sped off. The police gave chase, and on stopping and searching the vehicle, they found almost 200 kg of gutkha hidden inside.
Police arrested S. Murugan from Pammal and Mr. Lakshmanan from Vengaivasal. They discovered that they were involved in the smuggling of tobacco products and their distribution in and around Tambaram. Selaiyur police arrested the duo and seized their car. The accused were brought before a judicial magistrate and sent to prison.
One week raid
Chennai city police, in their fight against banned tobacco products, seized over 280 kg of gutkha, filed 143 cases and detained 146 people during the week.
A senior police official said that during the week-long raid, teams found nearly 250kg of gutkha products hidden in a warehouse on Narayana Mudali Street in the city of Geroge. Kothavalchavadi Police arrested S. Eashwar Singh and V. Barathsingh, both of Seven Wells, for hoarding the banned tobacco products.
