BHUBANESWAR: The state’s CT and GST enforcement wing on Thursday raided 30 locations in 14 districts where pan masala and other tobacco products are produced following allegations of tax evasion .

On tip-off and recent interception of few vehicles carrying tobacco products smuggled, GST officials along with police carried out raids in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Rairangpur, Balasore, Sambalpur , Bargarh, Balangir, Rourkela, Bhawanipatna, Kesinga and Berhampur.

GST officials check documents, computers, laptops, details of secret transactions and also collect details of manufacturers/traders inventory kept in their business premises and depots for cross-checking with accounting books. They seized the documents for further examination.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that these manufacturers/traders paid a very negligible amount of tax on their sales despite huge purchase and sale turnover. Officers have been instructed to complete the investigation at the earliest” , said a TPS official.

In raids conducted earlier in jewelry stores and furniture stores, state GST officials levied tax penalty and fine in the amount of 9.82 crore and 2.51 crore respectively and the amount had been filed with the government.
