Today presenter Dáithí Ó Sé shared his success in quitting a 30-a-day tobacco addiction.

The star explained to Angela Scanlon in this weekend’s episode of Ask me anything that in the 90s and 2000s, while working as one of TG4’s most recognizable presenters, he had an intense smoking habit.

Pointing at Angela’s little remote, he jokingly said he hoped it was a “vaper”. The star then shared that even though he doesn’t vape, he smokes a lot.

Frankly, he shared that he made a drastic change in the late 2000s to end his addiction to them.

“I haven’t smoked for a long time,” he said. “But did you do it?” Angela asked.

“I haven’t smoked for about 10 or 15 years,” Dáithí replied. “I smoked about 30 cigarettes a day, I came back to TG4 with two boxes of cigarettes.”

Sharing how he beat his nicotine addition, he said, “The way I gave them up was I got cold. I remember having withdrawal symptoms.”

“I had pain in my toes, knees, hair, eyes, teeth, my… everywhere.”

“Honestly, I almost started smoking again, but I remember quitting and after two weeks I had stopped spitting out all that phlegm – I know it’s disgusting, I know – but it all stopped afterwards two weeks and I haven’t smoked since. “

Despite giving up on them, the host admits he loves the smell of cigarettes and second-hand smoke.

“I love their smell. Oh my God, if there was someone smoking I would be in your lap – if it weren’t for the two-meter distance we have to stick to these days!” he joked.

Referring to his childhood, Dáithí shared that he was a bit cheeky when it came to his final years of high school, and was ultimately suspended.

The Kerry native said he disagreed with a teacher and they had a crossword that led to his suspension.
